What is the Wet Leakage Test?

The wet leakage test is a specialized electrical test conducted on solar PV modules to determine their resistance to moisture ingress. This test assesses the module's ability to withstand exposure to rain, condensation, or other forms of moisture.

How Does Wet Leakage Test Perform?

The Wet Leakage Current Test is performed by submerging the module in a shallow tank until the entire surface is covered, except for cable entries or the MC4 connections of junction boxes that are not designed for water immersion. A testing voltage is then applied across the output connectors, which are shorted, and the water bath solution. This voltage is gradually increased up to the module's system maximum voltage and applied for two minutes.

During the test, the insulation resistance is measured, and it should not exceed 40 MΩ per square meter of the modules that have an area larger than 0.1 m2. This measurement ensures that there is no excessive leakage current occurring between the module's conductive parts and the surrounding water.

Why Wet Leakage Test Performed on Solar PV Module?

Wet leakage testing is an essential step in ensuring the quality and reliability of solar PV modules. Solar modules are exposed to various weather conditions throughout their lifespan, including rain, humidity, and temperature changes. Under the IEC 61215 standard, wet leakage current testing is performed at specified voltages and wetting intervals. The allowable leakage current values for different module ratings are defined to ensure the modules meet the required safety standards. Manufacturers need to comply with this standard to ensure their modules are fit for installation and use.
